Brick was one of several Ocean County towns where records for attorney and county Republican chairman George R. Gilmore were subpoenaed this week, Shorebeat has learned.<\/p>\n

Mayor John Ducey, a Democrat, said the township received a subpoena for Gilmore\u2019s billing and other records dating back to 2010.<\/p>\n

Gilmore\u2019s firm, Gilmore & Monahan, served as township legal counsel\u00a0during the administration of former Republican Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis. When Ducey became mayor, the\u00a0firm did not have its contract with the township renewed. The subpoenas were delivered to numerous municipal offices as well as the county administration building by FBI agents Wednesday and Thursday, according to reports from news publications covering varying areas of the county.<\/p>\n

The subpoenas demand\u00a0all invoices, payments, as well as all minutes and recordings where Gilmore or a representative of the firm were present to provide legal services, the Asbury Park Press reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For some time, it has been common knowledge in county political circles that Gilmore owes nearly\u00a0$1 million in back taxes to the federal government. A search of county records shows numerous tax liens filed against the influential GOP leader. According to sources within Ocean County government, a federal investigation surrounds not only the back taxes, but a $20,000 loan Gilmore received from an as-yet-unidentified contractor which was later repaid.<\/p>\n

Gilmore\u2019s attorney,\u00a0Kevin Marino, told an Asbury Park Press<\/a> reporter that he believes the subpoenas are linked to the tax liens.<\/p>\n
