A groundbreaking ordinance that would ban the sale of puppies<\/a> within the township is up for a public hearing and final vote Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The ordinance would have the heaviest of implications on Breeders Association of America, a puppy store in a Route 70 shopping plaza that has been accused of selling unhealthy dogs from so-called \u201cpuppy mills.\u201d The ordinance expands a ban passed by the township in 2012 that, under the advice of then-attorney Jean Cipriani, grandfathered in the store \u2013 the last of the existing puppy sales businesses in town. The revised ordinance would remove the grandfathering clause, forcing Breeders Association to stop selling non-rescue puppies or shut down permanently.<\/p>\n

The new ordinance comes as Breeders Association of America, located in a\u00a0Route 70 strip mall, has come under fire for allegedly selling unhealthy pets, including one that died from a fatal\u00a0canine virus. The Ocean County Health Department is currently conducting an investigation into the claims and has shut the store down until April 28. The proposed Brick ordinance would shut down puppy sales at the site permanently.<\/p>\n

The hearing will take place at the council\u2019s regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the municipal complex on Chambers Bridge Road.<\/p>\n
