Timothy Boyle, the victim, who name was not released, was exiting the Aldi supermarket July 23 after 2 p.m. when a man sitting on a bench told her that her car had been hit by another vehicle. When the woman went to inspect her car, the man asked if he could use her phone, which she allowed.

“Eventually the victim asked for her phone back and the suspect would not give it to her,” said Boyle. “The victim then grabbed for her phone and a struggle ensued. As the victim was struggling to get her phone back the suspect grabbed her pocketbook. The victim began to scream and let the phone go.”

The suspect let go of her pocketbook, but ran away with the victim’s cell phone, valued at over $600, towards Laurel Square shopping plaza. The suspect was described as being approximately 25 years old, unshaven, with reddish brown hair.

Police then got to work tracking down the suspect, who would later be identified as Kyle Stinson, 25, of Brandywine Court.

Detective Joseph Leskowski was assigned the case and interviewed the victim. The victim provided Leskowski additional information that the suspect had been drinking from a McDonald’s cup while seated on the bench. The cup was retrieved and placed into evidence, leading Leskowski to go to McDonald’s, where he was able to review video that showed a man matching the description the victim gave.

Leskowski spoke to the victim’s son later that evening. The victim’s son provided several phone numbers dialed from the his mother’s phone after the robbery. Additionally, the victim’s son said he made several phone calls to these numbers. The victim’s son told police that he had obtained a name of Kyle or Brandon Stinson from a person he spoke with on the phone.

Leskowski checked social media and was able to find a Kyle Stinson, also known as Kyle Brandon Stinson. He then checked the Brick Police in-house computer system and located the man.

“Stinson’s pedigree information matched the description given by the victim,” said Boyle.

Leskowski was then able to obtain Stinson’s address on Brandywine Court.

Leskowski interviewed Stinson at Brick Police headquarters and was ultimately able to obtain a complete confession from Stinson, Boyle said. The victim’s cell phone SIM card and cell phone cover were recovered from Stinson’s place of residence.

Stinson was charged with robbery and theft. He was processed and released on summons.

~

Note: This story initially stated the crime occurred July 27 instead of July 23.

Some skilled detective work on the part of Brick police officers led to the capture of a man who hatched a plan to rob a woman’s cell phone and pocket book outside a township supermarket Thursday.
