Ocean County officials have awarded a multi-million dollar contract that includes the replacement of the Midstreams Bridge in Brick, which is expected to take a year to complete.<\/p>\n

Midlantic Construction, of Barnegat Township, will complete the\u00a0$4,661,443 job of replacing the current, 55-year-old span that carries traffic along\u00a0Jordan-Midstreams Road across Beaver Dam Creek.\u00a0The current bridge, built in 1962,\u00a0is a 131-foot long, 35-foot wide structure consisting of adjacent precast concrete slab beams supported on concrete pile caps founded on timber piles with timber bulkheading.<\/p>\n

The new bridge will be an 111-foot-long long steel and concrete construcn, said Freeholder John P. Kelly, Director of Law and Public Safety.\u00a0The 49-foot wide bridge will include a 6-foot-wide sidewalk on the west side.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new modern bridge is designed to last between 70 and 80 years,\u201d said Kelly.<\/p>\n

According to county engineering officials, the existing timber piles and timber bulkhead substructure show signs of \u201cadvanced deterioration\u201d while the existing concrete pile caps exhibit delamination and moderate section loss.<\/p>\n

Work will be staged, allowing a single lane for northbound traffic throughout the construction, which will begin this fall, according to officials. An exact start date has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
