As the debate over the legalization of marijuana continues in New Jersey \u2013 both candidates for governor gave their positions at Tuesday night\u2019s debate \u2013 Brick residents hoping for a convenient way to replenish their stash will still have to wait.<\/p>\n

A sign posted at the property next to the abandoned Herbertsville Deli site advertising a marijuana dispensary \u201ccoming soon\u201d is just a practical joke, we\u2019ve confirmed. It\u2019s not the first time<\/a> a group of local pranksters have targeted the site; earlier this year, another sign promised a massage parlor would be moving in. Township officials have told Shorebeat that there have been no plans submitted to improve (or demolish) the former deli. The building next door was recently renovated so it can be used as modern office space.<\/p>\n

Last night, Democratic candidate for governor Phil Murphy endorsed the legalization of marijuana, saying minorities are unfairly affected by the state\u2019s drug laws, and legalization would produce hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for the state. Kim Guadagno, the Republican candidate, said she is against legalizing marijuana for recreational use, but supports decriminalizing the substance and expanding the state\u2019s medical marijuana program.<\/p>\n

As it currently stands, there are six medical marijuana dispensaries in New Jersey, known as \u201calternative treatment centers\u201d according to the Department of Health. They are located in Egg Harbor Township, Montclair, Woodbridge, Cranbury, Secaucus and Bellmawr.<\/p>\n
