(File Photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A mass of modern communication methods is leading to the end of an era in the southern portion of the township: the fire bell at the Pioneer Hose Fire Company will toll for the last time soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pioneer siren is at an end,\u201d said Mayor John Ducey.<\/p>\n<p>The township had received numerous complaints about the siren, which, in the days before wireless communication, alerted volunteers to a fire call. Different Shore communnities have handled the issue of fire sirens differently. In Surf City, a public outcry led to a malfunctioning siren being <a href=\"https:\/\/thesandpaper.villagesoup.com\/p\/surf-city-s-fire-siren-sounds-again\/1549093\">replaced rather than eliminated<\/a>, mainly due to a lack of wireless service during Superstorm Sandy. But Brick officials say their equipment can handle the task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no reason to have that [siren] in 2018 since everyone has cell phones,\u201d Ducey said.<\/p>\n<p>Ducey said he discussed the matter with the police chief and fire commissioners before the decision was reached.<\/p>\n<p>Pioneer Hose operates two fire houses \u2013 one off Drum Point Road on the Brick mainland and the other on Route 35 in the barrier island portion.
