Brick will be home to a new location of a supermarket chain that is expanding throughout New Jersey.<\/p>\n

Lidl, a discount supermarket chain based in Neckarsulm, Germany that operates more than 10,000 stores in Europe and the United States, will open a Brick location in the Riverwalk shopping center at the corner of Brick Boulevard and Hooper Avenue.<\/p>\n

The store will open in the space once occupied by discount retailer Cost Cutters. The space has been vacant for some time. In the global marketplace, Lidl\u2019s chief competitor is Aldi, which also operates a store in Brick. Lidl\u2019s history dates back to 1930.<\/p>\n

Mayor John Ducey said township officials first learned of the planned opening when representatives from Lidl contacted the town to begin planning their new location.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may need to go before the planning board for a sign and to build a loading dock,\u201d said Ducey, however currently they only need a simple permit to set up the new location. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to be open tomorrow, obviously, but they signed a lease and they called us to ask about what they need to open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just weeks ago, it was revealed that Trader Joe\u2019s \u2013 a subsidiary of Aldi, a fellow German retailer \u2013 will open a supermarket in Brick Plaza.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exciting because people definitely wanted more grocery store options and over the next few months we\u2019re going to have two new ones opening,\u201d said Ducey. \u201cIt seems like we\u2019re a hotbed for commercial activity, and I\u2019m glad to see an empty storefront being filled by a quality grocer that\u2019s somewhat new to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ducey said he\u2019s heard good things about Lidl from residents of other communities where the company operates stores. Locally, Lidl operates stores in Eatontown and Hazlet, and a large location is currently under construction on Route 9 in Lacey Township.<\/p>\n

The size of the store has not yet been revealed, however signage outside the location where Lidl has signed its lease advertises 25,000 square feet of space.<\/p>\n
