Mastronardy in a county press release. \u201cA police officer may stop a vehicle and issue a summons for violations of this law.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s a matter of safety though, Mastronardy said.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWearing a seatbelt, regardless of seating position, increases your chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is an important step in keeping with safe driving.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The campaign coincides each year with the lead up to Memorial Day Weekend, and its expected traffic, as seasonal visitors and residents begin their summer traditions through that first weekend in June.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAs we approach the summer season we see the number of people in Ocean County more than double,\u201d said Ocean County Commissioner John P. Kelly, Director of Law and Public Safety, in a county press release. \u201cWearing your seatbelt is just one simple step you can take to make traveling safer for you and your loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Crashes with an \u201cunrestrained occupant\u201d \u2014 that is, someone not wearing a seatbelt \u2014 resulted in six deaths in Ocean County last year, according to the county.\u00a0 The Numetric crash tool which tracks such statistics showed a total of 122 crashes with an unrestrained occupant and 66 of those crashes resulted in an injury.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Ocean County announcement is part of a nationwide effort, under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The state made its own announcement that it too will participate in Click It or Ticket.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cSeat belts have been proven to be one of the best ways to prevent death and serious injury in a crash. Yet statistics show that many people still don\u2019t buckle up,\u201d said state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal in a Division of Highway Traffic Safety press release. \u201cThe Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign is aimed at educating the public on the importance of abiding by seat belt laws. It could literally save your life.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>To \u201ckick off\u201d this year\u2019s Click It or Ticket campaign, state police will be visibly stationed at the state borders, said Grewel. New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania will team up for a one-day, four-hour \u201cBorder to Border\u201d (\u201cB2B\u201d) event featuring highly visible seat belt enforcement for drivers at state border checkpoints.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cAcross the campaign, participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a \u2018no-excuses\u2019 approach to seat belt enforcement, writing citations throughout the day and with a particular focus on nighttime enforcement,\u201d according to the state press release.
