An Ocean County grand jury handed up an indictment of a Brick Township woman Wednesday, charging her with murder and weapons offenses in the alleged killing of her wife with a wine bottle chiller.<\/p>\n

Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus, 49, was charged following the May 17, 2020 incident that resulted in the death of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, 32, in a condominium on Creek Road in the township\u2019s Herbertsville section. Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus is charged is facing charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor\u2019s Office, police were called to the condominium for a report of an unresponsive woman at a residence. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus in an upstairs bedroom of the residence. An autopsy performed the following day led to the death being labeled a homicide.<\/p>\n

The ensuring investigation revealed to authorities that the suspect and victim were married and resided at the Creek Road address. Investigators also found that a cylindrical container used for the purpose of chilling wine was utilized in the commission of the murder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe injuries sustained by Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus were consistent with the implementation of this item,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

On May 18, 2020, a warrant for the arrest of Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was issued. On May 21, 2020, Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was taken into custody by law enforcement in Houston, Texas. She was extradited back to New Jersey and has been lodged in the Ocean County Jail since her return.<\/p>\n
