Brick Township officials on Tuesday night selected a nominee to fill the seat on the township council vacated by Lisa Crate, who left her post behind the dais to serve as Brick Township\u2019s mayor following the departure of John Ducey.<\/p>\n

New Jersey law calls for a vacant seat on a municipal council to be filled by a member of the same political party as the person who vacated the seat. Since Crate is a Democrat, the municipal Democratic committee submitted three nominees for the seat to the council, who were tasked with deciding which should fill the unexpired term.<\/p>\n

The committee presented Erica Demaio, Melissa Travers and Emma Mammano. The council ultimately selected Travers, 37, to fill the seat in a unanimous vote. Travers will be formally sworn in to office at a future meeting of the council. A political newcomer, it was not immediately clear whether she would seek to serve the remainder of the term by running in November\u2019s election. Travers is employed as a nurse, Shorebeat learned.<\/p>\n

This November, elections will be held for both the mayor\u2019s seat as well as the seat on council for the time remaining in the terms of those respective offices. Travers, in her role as councilwoman, and Crate, as mayor, will serve until Dec. 31, 2023 unless they are elected. Crate has confirmed she does, indeed, intend to run for mayor.<\/p>\n

Brick\u2019s seven-member township council currently has a 6-1 Democrat majority.<\/p>\n
