Brick Township\u2019s planning board has approved the transformation of an aging office building into a dialysis center \u2013 a service that is in high demand in the local area, officials have said.<\/p>\n

The dialysis center will be located within an existing office complex across the street from what has become known as the \u201ctriangle lot,\u201d near the convergence of Route 88, Jack Martin Boulevard and Burrsville Road. Construction has already begun, with the long-standing building having received a fresh coat of paint, and contractors working on other facets of the property.<\/p>\n

Route 88 Brick Medical Complex, LLC, a local subsidiary firm owned by Fresenius<\/a>, a national kidney specialist firm that employs 70,000 people nationwide, proposed turning the building located at 1541 Route 88 into a full dialysis center. Dialysis, local officials have occasionally noted, is a service with a significant need in Brick Township, with the municipal government itself securing grant funding to provide patients with transportation<\/a> to their appointments. Traditionally, the need for dialysis services becomes a major issue during the summer months when part-time residents return to the Shore area.<\/p>\n

Township Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said one of two buses that will be dedicated to dialysis transportation for senior citizens arrived last week. Funded by a grant, the bus service will coordinate with dialysis providers to transport resident senior citizens with no other options for transportation to their appointments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are still in the hiring process for a driver and aide for the bus, but do expect to have the dialysis transportation up and running by the end of the year,\u201d Bergin said.<\/p>\n

Fresenius, at the planning board hearing, said it would utilize, improve and occupy a portion of the property \u2013 approximately 6,200 square feet in area \u2013 for use as a dialysis clinic. The clinic would be comprised of dialysis patient treatment stations, patient training, offices and waiting areas, storage and related administrative and accessory areas. The clinic will be operational weekdays and weekends, accommodating multiple patient treatment shifts per day.<\/p>\n

Accessory improvements include development of a standby generator, refuse area, fa\u00e7ade improvements, business and directional signage, lighting, and modifications to parking areas.<\/p>\n

The planning board granted Fresenius variances that were related to the location of the existing building.<\/p>\n
