The township\u2019s planning board has approved the construction of a Hardee\u2019s restaurant in the Bay Harbor Shopping Center on Brick Boulevard, which also houses a Stop \u2018N Shop supermarket and a Burlington Coat Factory store.<\/p>\n

After several hearings dating back to the summer, the board initially approved the restaurant at a meeting in late October and voted in favor of a resolution adopting the approval in November. That approval means Brick will be home to the first Hardee\u2019s restaurant to operate in New Jersey in more than two decades, when the chain left the state. Hardee\u2019s, owned by Carpinteria, Calif.-based CKE Restaurants, announced last year that it would re-enter the northeast U.S. market.<\/p>\n

The site where the restaurant has been approved \u2013 the northwest corner of the shopping center\u2019s parking lot, near the jug handle lane from Brick Boulevard \u2013 was approved in 2009 for a fast food restaurant and drive-through. Bay Harbor Shopping Center had elected to complete the 2009 approval process when Hardee\u2019s showed interest in the site.<\/p>\n

The planning board approved several variances for the site, including waiving the township\u2019s minimum 75 foot-wide front setback, since the restaurant will be located next to a jughandle. The board also allowed two signs on a single fa\u00e7ade where only one is permitted; both the north and south elevations were approved to contain two signs \u2013 one on each being the three-star Hardee\u2019s logo. The board also allowed the restaurant to have an 18-inch high landscape berm where three feet is normally required.<\/p>\n

On a preliminary basis, the restaurant would be open between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., with the potential for the hours to be expanded if the restaurant is successful, according to Anthony Gomez, an operations expert with Hardee\u2019s who submitted testimony to the planning board. The restaurant would hire between 40 and 50 employees who would work in shifts of seven to 10 hours. The restaurant would receive two food deliveries each week plus two bun deliveries.<\/p>\n

Hardee\u2019s, mainly known for its hamburgers, would be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the proposed Brick location.<\/p>\n

Karl Penke, a traffic consultant, testified that about 60 percent of the restaurant\u2019s traffic would enter the restaurant area from Brick Boulevard itself, with the rest being divided up between Hooper Avenue, which runs behind the shopping center, and customers who were already in the shopping center at another business. Cars will be able to access the restaurant directly from the jug handle lane itself.<\/p>\n

The restaurant chain\u2019s Brick location will the first of 200 that are planned for the northeastern U.S. market. Hardee\u2019s currently operates 2,000 locations nationwide.<\/p>\n
