The Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority announced this week that it would begin flushing the city water distribution system this spring, during which time the agency will temporarily modify its disinfection process.<\/p>\n

The BTMUA will begin its system-wide flushing in April, the agency announced Wednesday, part of a periodic required maintenance effort. The project will take through June 2024 to complete.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this time, the Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority will temporarily modify the disinfection process of water treatment from chloramine residuals to free chlorine,\u201d the announcement said. \u201cFree chlorine is commonly used in public water supplies as a disinfectant.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation<\/a>: \u201cChlorines have a higher oxidizing potential than chloramines, but residual chloramines are more persistent and may provide better disinfection from source to tap.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result of the temporary change in disinfection type, customers may experience a more noticeable chlorine taste and odor in their tap. In addition, they may experience low water pressure and some discoloration of water.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is normal and no cause for concern,\u201d the announcement said.<\/p>\n

The MUA also said its workers will likely be seen working along roadways throughout the township during the flushing process.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are driving in areas where flushing is taking place, please drive cautiously for the safety of yourself and our employees,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n
