Brick Township council members this week formally adopted a fee range for the township\u2019s two new electric vehicle charging stations \u2013 an amount that is commensurate with other local rates, officials said.<\/p>\n

The fees were introduced last month and subject to a public hearing before being adopted by ordinance. That hearing occurred this week, with no comments from members of the public. The council ultimate adopted the fee schedule unanimously.<\/p>\n

The two EV chargers were installed last year, but thus far were only available for use by township-owned electric vehicles utilized by Parks Department security staff. The chargers, installed with funds from a state grant and operated by private firm ChargePoint, will now be opened to the public. They are located in the large parking lot at Windward Beach Park and in the lot of the Drum Point Sports Complex.<\/p>\n

The ordinance sets a range of fees for the chargers between 17 cents and 38 cents per killowathour, depending on market rates. The average rate per killowatthour in the United States in Jan. 2025 was 16 cents, according to Electric Choice, a website that tracks EV charging price trends nationally. The lowest rate in the nation is in Florida, at 11 cents, and the highest is in Hawaii, at 33 cents. New Jersey\u2019s rates tend to land somewhere in the middle, however the market rate could be affected by state surcharges which ChargePoint would be required to add to the price.<\/p>\n

ChargePoint has deployed a \u201cJ plug\u201d style charging system at its Brick locations, which produce 6.6 kW of power. Additional public charging stations are located in Brick at private properties, including the township\u2019s Target store, which features a different style universal plug, and the Wawa at Route 70 and Duquesne Boulevard, which features a Tesla Supercharger plug. Two other locations also feature \u201cJ plugs,\u201d including a gas station on Route 88 near Arrowhead Boulevard, and the Mantoloking Road Playhouse on Mantoloking Road.<\/p>\n
