The township historically limited the number of permits to 120 per year, but the larger size of the beach, the completion of replenishment work and increased demand has led officials to seek to increase the number of annual permits to 200.

Council President Vincent Minichino said the plan to increase the number of permits issued this year was reviewed by the police department, engineering department and beach staff. All agreed that 200 permits was a “reasonable number,” he said. The township will utilize a lottery system to grant the permits, which will be open only to Brick residents on the first day.

Beach buggies are allowed to access the township’s beaches between Oct. 1 and April 30 each year. Permits cost $35 and inspections are required to ensure vehicles have the property safety equipment and are four wheel drive capable. The township announces sale dates each year before the fall season and normally posts an application form on its website.

The ordinance is subject to a second reading and public hearing before a final vote, set for the Sept. 9 council meeting.

Citing increased demand, Brick Township officials introduced an ordinance Tuesday night that would increase the number of beach buggy permits issued each year and allow township residents to obtain them first.
