Shore residents will begin the new year with two months of detours, but end up with a safer bridge once construction work is completed. State officials announced on Christmas Eve that the Lovelandtown Bridge, which carries Bridge Avenue over the Point Pleasant Canal \u2013 and ultimately connects the mainland to the barrier island \u2013 will be shut down for most of January and February 2026.<\/p>\n

According to the state Department of Transportation, beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, the bridge will be closed and detoured in both directions. The closure will remain in place until late February 2026. Local access for businesses and residents will be maintained on Bridge Avenue, but traffic will be detoured.<\/p>\n

The closure is necessary, the state said in its announcement, to make priority repairs to re-tension the support cables on the bridge to \u201censure the continued proper and safe operation of the bridge,\u201d which was built in 1971. As part of the necessary maintenance, two shoring towers will be erected on the road to facilitate work on the support cables.<\/p>\n

The bridge, which is 54 years old, is completely located within Point Pleasant Borough, however its eastern side is just mere blocks from Bay Head, making it one of the area\u2019s most familiar sites to visitors. The work is being done in the winter to minimize the impact to the towns, according to the DOT. If work is completed earlier, the bridge will reopen sooner, the agency added.<\/p>\n

The work is part of a $20.4 million drawbridge preventative maintenance contract to make repairs to bridges in Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean counties.<\/p>\n
