(File Photo)

Brick officials this week said school speed limit signs on Lanes Mill Road would be repaired before the upcoming school year begins, and a traffic study on the roadway would commence after classes begin.

The update came after a resident inquired about the status of potential changes to the road’s speed limit or traffic pattern following the death of Brick Memorial High School student Jackson Mueller, who was struck by a juvenile hit-and-run driver who was allegedly speeding on the way to school in May. After the tragic accident, many residents who live along the corridor – upon which three schools are located – called for more enforcement of school zone speed limits, better signage, and a reduction of the normal speed limit of 40 m.p.h. Lanes Mill Road is a county road, and therefore requires action to be initiated by the Ocean County Board of Commissioners.

“With regard to the school safety lights, we said we would have them done by September,” said Mayor Lisa Crate. “We have a month to get them done and the county assured us those lights will be replaced.”

At least two of the flashing school zone speed limit lights are outdated and parts are no longer available for them, so they will be replaced, she said. All of the others will be checked and have any non-working bulbs replaced by the time the 2026-27 school year begins in September. She also said township officials have coordinated with the county to have a better system in place to keep tabs on the signs and repair them when they malfunction.

“One of the reasons it has not been fixed in however-long is because there was not a direct chain of command of people that was understood,” Crate explained. “It was pushed from one person to the next, to the next, and that was one of the things we clarified at the meeting [with county officials]: how we would deal with those future outages and how they could be repaired quickly and efficiently.”

<a href="https://shorebeat.com/brick/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/dji_fly_20230713_173924_595_1689287427716_photo_optimized-scaled.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-image-1" data-rl_title="Parking lot improvements underway at Brick Memorial High School, July 2023. Once such a study is conducted – likely in September – the county could recommend a lower speed limit on Lanes Mill Road. The county would adopt a proposal at the commissioner level, then send it to the township for potential passage by resolution.

“Speed limit changes would have to come from the county, for us to vote on,” the mayor said. “They were amenable to that – where they’re going to land on that, I don’t want to speculate – but it would be less than 40 m.p.h.”

Brick officials this week said school speed limit signs on Lanes Mill Road would be repaired before the upcoming school year begins, and a traffic study on the roadway would commence after classes begin.
