Brick Township\u2019s \u201clead and seed\u201d program, which places middle school students in charge of influencing their peers and their community against drugs, is already yielding results \u2013 more than 42 pounds of them.<\/p>\n

Students from Lake Riviera Middle School and Veterans Memorial Middle School teamed up with Brick Police Officers Tara Schinder and John Alexander from the Community Policing Division to set up two collections of unused prescription medication at senior citizen developments in town.<\/p>\n

The collection at the clubhouses of the Greenbriar 1 and Lions Head developments yielded 42.6 pounds old and expired medications for these two days. Law enforcement have said that young people who get hold of such prescriptions can abuse them, leading to drug addiction.<\/p>\n

The Lead and Seed program is a youth-empowered, adult supported, environmental approach to drug prevention for middle school age children. The program was kicked off in Brick earlier this year with the cooperation of the Brick police department and school district.<\/p>\n
