The township recently took delivery of 600 tons of salt.

Salt, Fozman said, works equivalently to raising the temperature by about 15 degrees. So if the air temperature is more than 15 degrees below freezing, it generally will not work. One of the reasons schools are often delayed is to allow the temperature to get within range of salt becoming effective.

Additionally, said Fozman, township crews plow snow only when four inches of snow have fallen.

The National Weather Service is currently calling for rain on Monday, which could turn to a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow before 1 a.m. overnight between Monday and Tuesday. A period of snow, accumulating less than a half inch, could occur between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Though Brick’s roadways will likely be spared from serious problems Monday, with a storm forecast to bring primarily rain to the Jersey Shore, the township has enough salt on hand to cover six more storms, officials said. “It takes 100 tons of salt to do the town once,” said Councilman Jim Fozman.
