(Credit: Google Maps)

Brick firefighters responded to two incidents involving watercraft on Wednesday.

The first call came in at 4:45 a.m. in a lagoon in the Sandy Point neighborhood, said Chief Kevin Batzel of the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety. Firefighters from Brick Fire District No. 1 arrived and found a 29-foot boat to be fully involved, he said. Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control and ultimately determined that the cause of the fire was electrical in nature, likely having to do with the boat’s hookup to shore power.

Batzel said the fire began outside the boat and worked its way in. No one was injured, and the boat’s owner was not on hand at the time the fire broke out. The boat was destroyed.

In the afternoon, just after 3 p.m., firefighters and EMTs rushed to Bay Tree Court in the township’s barrier island portion for a report of a boat fire that turned out to be a minor incident involving a personal watercraft. Batzel said the owner of a Sea Doo was using starter fluid and experienced a “flash” which he mistook to be a fire. The owner’s injuries were minor and he was treated at the scene and did not have to be taken to the hospital.

Brick firefighters responded to two incidents involving watercraft on Wednesday.
