He was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge James Blaney. He will also have to submit to mental health counseling and perform 30 hours of community service, plus waive his right to ever own a pet again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\"><span class=\"s12\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201cI commend Assistant Prosecutor Tannenbaum-Newman\u2019s efforts in assuring Robbins was prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said in a statement. \u201cThe successful conviction of Robbins to the charge of Third Degree Cruelty to Animals is the highest degree statute possible by law within the state of New Jersey.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">The sentencing stems from an April 14, 2014 call for police response in reference to the death of Mocha. \u00a0Arriving officers found Mocha dead within a sealed animal travel carrier which had been connected by a hose to the exhaust of Robbins\u2019 vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">On May 7, 2014, officials from the NJSPCA brought the case to the attention of the Ocean County Prosecutor\u2019s Office seeking legal advice regarding how to proceed with the investigation and whether charges were appropriate. \u00a0Toms River officials previously had elected not to prosecute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">The prosecutor\u2019s office immediately directed that a necropsy be conducted and opened its own investigation regarding the events surrounding Mocha\u2019s death. <\/span>Robins was indicted in the case in August 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fb-share-button fcbkbttn_large_button \" data-href=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/brick\/2015\/03\/toms-river-man-who-euthanized-dog-with-car-exhaust-sentenced-to-probation-must-give-up-cat\/\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"large\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 76-year-old Toms River man who euthanized his pet dog, Mocha, by hooking a line from his car\u2019s exhaust pipe to a crate in which the dog was locked will serve two years of probation and have to surrender his pet cat to an animal rescue group.
