Brick Police EMTs and Monoc paramedics were initially dispatched to a medical call reporting a possible drug overdose at the Millbrook Road home, said Police Chief Nils R. Bergquist.

The Monoc paramedics were first on the scene and saw a 42-year-old man with what they believed to be a weapon in the home, Bergquist said, leading the to back out of the residence and call for patrol officers.

“The individual refused to make contact with us or allow us in,” said Bergquist.

The male was in need of medical assistance but refused to be treated or evaluated, said Sgt. Larry Petrola.

The department’s SERT team, commonly known as a SWAT team, responded, along with the department Crisis Negotiation Team. A perimeter was established around the home and the block was closed to traffic.

Eventually, the crisis negotiators, Detective Peter Thomas and Ptl. Tara Schinder, were able to persuade the man to come out of the home. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Bergquist said.

No one was injured after a standoff between a man and Brick police ended peacefully Tuesday night.
