(Credit: NOAA)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A relative rarity outside of hurricane season, reconnaissance aircraft crews often known as the \u201cHurricane Hunters\u201d will fly into the weekend nor\u2019easter to aid with forecasts, the National Weather Service confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The air crews, based out of\u00a0Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, will make two flights: one at 2 p.m. Friday and one at 1 a.m. Saturday morning. Each time, the flight crew will make 10 drops into the storm, using sensors to gather data including air pressure, wind speeds and other information.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft will fly \u201cas high as possible,\u201d a copy of the flight plan said.<\/p>\n<p>While the WC-130 aircraft and their crews are most known for their daring missions flying above the center of hurricanes and tropical weather systems, winter flight plans are not unheard of, and the National Weather Service develops specific winter plans that differ slightly from tropical-weather missions.<\/p>\n<p>In a winter mission, \u201cthe goal is to release the dropsonde as high as possible in the atmosphere and ahead of the storm extending the network of weather data over the water,\u201d according to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurricanehunters.com\/mission.html\" target=\"_blank\">article posted<\/a> by the Hurricane Hunter Association. \u201cThis data drastically increases the accuracy of computer weather forecasts for nor\u2019easters and pacific winter low pressure systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fb-share-button fcbkbttn_large_button \" data-href=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/brick\/2016\/01\/hurricane-hunters-will-fly-into-noreaster-to-help-with-forecasts\/\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"large\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A relative rarity outside of hurricane season, reconnaissance aircraft crews often known as the \u201cHurricane Hunters\u201d will fly into the weekend nor\u2019easter to aid with forecasts, the National Weather Service confirmed.
