(Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>When the township\u2019s Pathmark store closed its doors last fall, it left two voids: a lack of a supermarket on the northern side of town, and a gigantic hole in one of Brick\u2019s largest shopping centers, Laurel Square.<\/p>\n<p>The shopping center still houses numerous businesses \u2013 from the Scone Shoppe, to Odyssey hair salon, to K-mart \u2013 but without Pathmark as its anchor, traffic has dwindled, at least judging\u00a0by a consistently\u00a0sparsely-utilized parking lot. (Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>None of the rumors are true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe plan to be a long-term owner of Laurel Square,\u201d said\u00a0Kristen Moore, spokeswoman for Brixmor Property Group, the owner of the shopping center. \u201cWe are currently reviewing merchandising options for the center, but it is premature to make any tenant announcements at this time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brick Township Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said township officials have met\u00a0with representatives of Brixmor over the future of the site. She confirmed that the company \u201cabsolutely denied\u201d any intent to sell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, they indicated they were working diligently to secure another food store tenant,\u201d Bergin said.<\/p>\n<p>In the meeting, Mayor John Ducey voiced his desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorebeat.com\/brick\/2016\/03\/wegmans-tickled-by-brick-residents-calls-for-store-but-will-one-be-built\/\">lure a high-end grocery store<\/a>, such as Wegmans or Trader Joe\u2019s, to Brick, and the two parties have been in contact on various occasions since the meeting, discussing the company\u2019s plans to make improvements to the shopping center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no reason to believe there is any fact whatsoever in those rumors,\u201d Bergin said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its prominent location\u00a0between state highways 70 and 88, Laurel Square represents one of Brick\u2019s highest-value ratables.
