The township will apply for Green Acres funding to defray some of the cost of the project, however the municipal government was not successful in partnering with the school district to cover a portion of the expenditure. Still, he said, the courts need to be improved both for aesthetics as well as safety issues.

“If anybody plays tennis, and you’ve stepped on those courts, you definitely know they need to be redone,” said Ducey. “There are cracks everywhere. I’ve had numerous tennis players throughout the years from our high schools asking when it’s going to be done, and that goes back to when I was first on council.”

When the township decided to renovate Angela Hibbard Park, which just opened two weeks ago, some residents were hoping new tennis courts would be installed there. The township, however, decided to add a dog park and pickleball courts. The renovation of the courts near town hall will be a welcome sight for tennis players, the mayor said.

“It’s going to be a great project, and it will finally get done after many years of neglect,” said Ducey. “It looks so bad for our community when people come here to play tennis and they have to look at what’s out there.”

The township council voted unanimously in favor of soliciting bids for the project. A contract award for the work will come at a future meeting.

Brick Township officials, after recently updating several parks around town, will take the next step in facilities upgrades by renovating the tennis courts near town hall.
