What a life!<\/p>\n

Living a block or two from the Manasquan River, just up Herbertsville Road from the beach and boardwalk, and away from the stress of city life at an affordable price. In 1978, that\u2019s what drew my grandmother to Brick.<\/p>\n

Recently retired from a clothing store in Jersey City, she and her husband decided that frequent trips \u201cdown the Shore\u201d just weren\u2019t enough. After looking at Holiday City and some other locations, they saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a new senior development off Herbertsville Road \u2013 the street off which her family rented\u00a0a home near the river every summer.<\/p>\n

Winding River Village was then in the planning stages. No one knows exactly who came up with its slogan, but the phrase \u201cFor the Vital Adult\u201d lives on to the present day. My grandmother, who died 17 years ago last week, loved the place from day one. A tree and plaque in her honor is still located outside the community\u2019s clubhouse.<\/p>\n

There were five housing models, with starting prices ranging from $17,990 to $21,990. Monthly maintenance was $31. Property taxes were $45 per month, or $540 per year.<\/p>\n

While going through items this week, my mother got a kick out of finding the original advertisement for Winding River Village, complete with my grandmother\u2019s notes on costs and what was included. We thought you would as well, as a slice of Brick Township history and the origins of our township\u2019s senior population.<\/p>\n
