Seaside Heights will demolish homes that have been abandoned and are posing a safety hazard, officials said.
In a move being repeated in numerous towns affected by Superstorm Sandy, the borough has received estimates and will soon begin the process of demolishing several properties cited by residents as posing a hazard.
Word of the program emerged after a Hiering Avenue resident asked Mayor Anthony Vaz at a borough council meeting last week about a house on his street. Indeed, Vaz said, the property at 305 Hiering Avenue is on the list.
“There was an asbestos issue, so we’re waiting for the asbestos part of it to be completed,” before moving ahead with the demolition, said Vaz.
Borough Attorney Jean Cipriani recently received permission from a judge for the home to be razed. Though Seaside Heights will take the step of completing the demolition and place a lien on the property, the borough is not acquiring the property through eminent domain.
