Seaside Heights lifeguards will remain on duty after the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend \u2013 first continuing their daily schedule and then manning the beaches only on weekends.<\/p>\n

The beach patrol will continue operating on a daily basis through Sunday, Sept. 11. After Labor Day, guards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following Sept. 11, guards will be on duty for two weekends \u2013 Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25.<\/p>\n

“Specific swimming beaches depend upon our available manpower,” the borough said in a statement. “Thus, all beaches may be open for people to sunbathe, but swimming areas may be restricted.”<\/p>\n

Seaside Heights has an ordinance in place that allows swimming only at guarded beaches and in areas authorized by lifeguards. Last year, officials said, September produced numerous rescue calls to which fire departments and dive teams had to respond in the absence of guards.<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, numerous persons lost their lives when they entered unprotected ocean water and were caught in deadly rip tides,” the statement said. “The ocean is dangerous, especially in September and October.”<\/p>\n

The north bayfront beach will not be guarded after Labor Day.<\/p>\n
