In an effort to cut down on plastic refuse, the Seaside Park Environmental Advisory Committee will use its annual funding to purchase a water bottle filling station for the beachfront \u2013 one that may be the first of several around town.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will enable the environment committee to continue our cause on plastic reduction and waste,\u201d said resident Liliana Amabile, who chairs the group. \u201cIt is also to encourage our residents and visitors to be good stewards of our Shore environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first filling station will be located near the lifeguard headquarters building at N Street and the oceanfront. The location was chosen because it can tap into existing water piping used for the shower and wash station that is already present at the site. The filling station will be green-colored, powder coated for protection from the elements and will be able to be at least partially removed after the beach season so it can be safely stored.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur budget this year is very tight so we can pay for this bottle filler out of what\u2019s been allocated to us,\u201d said Amabile. \u201cWe did pick up a lot of bottles this year in our beach sweep, but there are efforts to reduce the plastic, and I think we\u2019ll get there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The station will be made by Most Dependable Fountains, which has previously worked with the borough to provide water fountains at other locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe checked the budget, and it\u2019s certainly in there and quite a positive,\u201d said Mayor John Peterson.<\/p>\n

The environmental committee will track the usage of the station in consideration of similar additions in the future.<\/p>\n
