A North Jersey man has been charged with fleeing the scene of an accident in which authorities say he struck an 11-year-old boy with his vehicle, causing the boy to become caught in the car\u2019s windshield.<\/p>\n

The Ocean County Prosecutor\u2019s Office said in a statement that police were called to the intersection of Bernegat and Fremont avenues in Seaside Heights at about 6:50 p.m. Friday night in connection with the accident.<\/p>\n

Responding officers eventually determined that a 2012 Infiniti G37, being operated by Giancarlos Fernandez, 19, of Hasbrouck Heights, was traveling west on Freemont Avenue \u201cat a high rate of speed\u201d when he struck an eleven year-old male riding his bicycle.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon impact the 11 year-old male became embedded in the windshield of the vehicle and was eventually thrown to the pavement,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe 11 year-old victim was air lifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of serious injuries. He is currently listed in stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the crash, the statement said, Fernandez exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by Seaside Heights Police Department detectives a few blocks away. Once apprehended, Seaside Heights police administered standardized field sobriety tests to Fernandez. He was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where a warrant was obtained for a draw of his blood. Fernandez was subsequently transported to the Ocean County Jail where he is currently lodged pending a detention hearing.<\/p>\n

Fernandez is charged with assault by auto and knowlingly leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injuries.<\/p>\n
