Toms River officials, responding to requests from residents, introduced an ordinance lowering the speed limit of a major north-south roadway in the Ortley Beach neighborhood.<\/p>\n

The ordinance, which drew praise from Councilman Justin Lamb, who said residents and members of the Ortley Beach Voters and Taxpayers Association brought up concerns about speeding on Bay Boulevard, will lower the speed limit on the roadway.<\/p>\n

The ordinance reduces the speed limit from 35 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. for the entire portion of Bay Boulevard as it runs through Ortley Beach. In neighboring Lavallette, the speed limit is already set at 30 m.p.h., bringing Toms River’s portion of the roadway in line with the remainder of the length of the corridor.<\/p>\n

The ordinance is aimed at “promoting pedestrian and vehicular safety,” the ordinance text states.<\/p>\n

The speed limit change was passed unanimously by the council on the first reading Wednesday night. It is subject to a public hearing and second vote before final adoption, which normally occurs at the next township council meeting.<\/p>\n
