Seaside Park officials have taken the next step toward replacing a portion of the breakwater that protects its municipal marina from the currents and chop of Barnegat Bay.<\/p>\n

The borough council unanimously voted to seek bids on the project, discussions on which date back to last year when it was first discussed at borough council meetings. The projects will consist of the demolition of portions of the existing breakwater, construction of new sections of breakwater, bulkhead repairs and other incidental work at the municipal marina.<\/p>\n

The breakwater at the marina is made up of two bulkhead structures that wrap around the cove near its entrance, with one extending from the slip closest to the bay at the parking area between J Street and I Street, and the second extending from the innermost portion of the peninsula at K Court, north of the marina itself. The bulkheads serve the attenuate wave action from the bay, protecting the marina from damage and controlling shoreline erosion. Much of the work will focus on one section of the existing breakwater.<\/p>\n

“The breakwater on the left side of the marina, which is north of the bayward entrance, has a 35-foot section that is in disrepair,” said Councilman William Kraft. “It will require replacement.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the council signed a $30,500 contract with engineering firm CME Associates to design the project and see it through to the bidding process. The borough appropriated $250,000 in its annual budget to fund the repairs. Bids are due to borough hall May 28, at which point a work schedule will be determined.<\/p>\n
