Seaside Park officials have awarded a contract to an engineering firm to design a \u201cpole barn\u201d building that will serve as a garage to protect vehicles and other equipment at the Public Works facility.<\/p>\n

The project has long been discussed, with council members agreeing that new vehicles require protection from the elements in such a building, however past proposals to actually engineer, design and permit the structure have come in above budget in the past. Last week, however, the borough settled on a firm to design the project after soliciting proposals from its pool of engineering consultants.<\/p>\n

The council awarded a $47,500 contract to Colliers Engineering, under which the company would provide project management services, a boundary and partial topographic survey, and utility investigation that need to be conducted before construction can begin. The firm will also provide a preliminary geotechnical evaluation, civil site design plans, bidding services and mapping.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe put it out to three engineering firms, and [Colliers] came in considerably less than every other firm, and they met the criteria,\u201d said Councilman William Kraft.<\/p>\n

The building would be constructed in the rear yard of the Public Works facility, near the borough emergency generator equipment. It is envisioned as an enclosed building with a roof and full mechanical suite, which necessitated the engineering effort before it could be constructed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one has mechanical, electrical and heating components, unlike some of the other construction projects in town,\u201d said Kraft.<\/p>\n

A bid solicitation for the actual construction of the building will, with specifications, will come after the engineering firm conducts its review, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an urgently needed project for the protection of all of our equipment,\u201d said Mayor John Peterson. \u201cIt\u2019s in the budget, and something we\u2019ve all enthusiastically endorsed.\u201d<\/p>\n
