The boombox is back<\/a> \u2013 albeit in Bluetooth form<\/a>, streamed from a smartphone \u2013 but its reign on the sand in Seaside Heights may be short-lived.<\/p>\n

The borough council on Wednesday voted in favor of a 60 day trial where \u201camplified music,\u201d such as boomboxes and other speakers, would not be allowed on the beach due to complaints over noise as well as lyrics with foul language roaring.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are bringing not only boomboxes, but DJ speakers up to the beach,\u201d said Mayor Anthony Vaz. \u201cIf you go to the beach to rest and relax, you\u2019re okay with a radio playing, but not these things blasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new policy is not yet codified in an ordinance, rather, the borough will post signs along the beachfront this week as a warning and beach badge checkers will ask those carrying boomboxes and speakers not to bring them onto the beach. Seaside Heights officials won\u2019t be looking to write summonses, Vaz said, but want to take a stand that excessively loud music isn\u2019t appropriate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis summer, we\u2019re seeing it much more often,\u201d he said, of the loud speakers. \u201cSometimes, people have been blasting vulgarities while there are little kids around.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the borough gets positive feedback on the measure, the council will likely pass a formal ordinance in September, Vaz said.<\/p>\n
