(Photo: Rachael Bowen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Seaside Heights officials say they are doing all they can \u2013 including taking legal action \u2013 to allow them to either secure or demolish a large rental property that neighbors say is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The property at 33 Sampson Avenue, called\u00a0Melrose by the Sea, was\u00a0a multi-unit rental property that offered one, two and three bedroom units to guests. Since Superstorm Sandy, it has been abandoned, neighbors say, leading to a rodent infestation and even squatters sometimes making their way into the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Iovino, the owner of the home next door, described a dangerous situation to Seaside Heights borough council members on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were some youngsters playing hide-and-seek, they went into the property and then got trapped in the property when the door slammed behind them,\u201d Iovino said.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, he said, a good Samaritan was able to break through the door with a cro-bar and free the children.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2668\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/lavallette-seaside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_2930.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"An abandoned rental property on Sampson Avenue in Seaside Heights. (Photo: Rachael Bowen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a very difficult position,\u201d said Iovino. \u201cI\u2019m having much difficulty renting my property because nobody wants to be next to that property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borough Attorney Jean Cipriani said the town has filed motions in Ocean County Superior Court seeking a judge\u2019s permission to demolish the building, but since it is now in foreclosure, the court has halted any action until after a sheriff\u2019s sale is completed, potentially later this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court will not enter an order for us to be able to demolish the property until the sheriff\u2019s sale takes place,\u201d said Cipriani.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2669\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/lavallette-seaside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_2931.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"An abandoned rental property on Sampson Avenue in Seaside Heights.
