Lavallette residents looking to get rid of that old tube TV or “dinosaur” computer will now have to pony up to do so.<\/p>\n

The borough is ending its free dropoff service for so-called “e-waste” after disposal fees from the Ocean County Landfill rose sharply, causing the borough to be in the red with the program.<\/p>\n

Residents can still arrange curbside pickup for e-waste items, but a small fee will be charged \u2013 $5 for a computer and $10 for a television.<\/p>\n

“We cannot charge for the actual disposal fee, but we can charge for the convenience of picking it up at the house,” said Borough Administrator John O. Bennett, explaining that the borough is charged $570 per load. Additionally, if a free service were to continue, Lavallette residents may have begun footing the bill for those who live in neighboring towns.<\/p>\n

“We will have a greater number of people who are not residents taking electronics to our recycling center, which could raise our costs,” said Bennett, adding that Toms River recently ended its free e-waste disposal service.<\/p>\n

Residents may still dispose of electronic\u00a0items for free at the Ocean County Recycling Center, located at 691 New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood.<\/p>\n
