Seaside Heights officials have decided against going forward with an ordinance that will allow dogs on the boardwalk year-round, after residents, tourists and business owners all raised issues following yesterday\u2019s Lavallette-Seaside Shorebeat article<\/a> on the proposal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard many complimentary things from dog owners, but even they were against it because of our situation in the summer,\u201d said Mayor Anthony Vaz. \u201cWe also had concern from business owners who have restaurants, saying they would have to stop people from coming in with dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other residents brought up issues as to whether dog owners would comply with the requirement to clean up after their pets, how dogs that could be aggressive would be kept off the boardwalk, and the fact that many visitors walk barefoot on the boardwalk during the summer months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked the council to reconsider the vote, and they will,\u201d said Vaz.<\/p>\n

Legally, since the ordinance has already been introduced, it must be included on the council\u2019s agenda for a meeting next Wednesday, but the matter is not expected to be seconded, effectively turning it down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is the best thing, at least for now,\u201d said Vaz.<\/p>\n
