Today’s closure was based on a test conducted earlier this week after a torrential rainstorm. Since it takes 24 hours for results to be processed, a followup test conducted yesterday was not ready until today, so the beaches had to be closed based on the previous day’s results.

The state’s limit for bacteria is 104 coliform units per 100 milliliters of water. Today’s testing in Seaside Heights showed a level of “less than 10” per 100 milliliters on some streets and zero on others, according to data released by the state.

The closure of Seaside Heights beaches will go down as being a short-term event.
