An overnight fire destroyed a home in Lavallette Thursday, prompting a response from numerous local fire companies to fight the blaze.<\/p>\n

The home, adjacent to Newark Avenue along the oceanfront, appeared to be completely destroyed on Thursday. An acrid smell of smoke still wafted through the air and firefighters doused at least one \u201chot spot\u201d that flared up after the fire had been put out. Police and Ocean County Sheriff\u2019s Department vehicles were blocking off the street and a portion of the boardwalk in front of the home was also roped off. The boardwalk itself was charred in front of the home.<\/p>\n

The East Dover fire company in Toms River said in a statement that its members were called out at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night to assist \u201cour brothers on the beach\u201d in the Lavallette company. The fire prompted an Island General Alarm which brought the Seaside Heights, Seaside Park,Ocean Beach and Point Pleasant companies to the scene as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile responding over the bridge the glow from the incident could be seen<\/span>,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The assisting fire companies helped ensure that the blaze did not spread to neighboring homes. Additional manpower from fire companies in Toms River and Island Heights were eventually called in.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrews from both the island and the mainland worked for over 3 hours to bring the fire under control,\u201d the East Dover company said. \u201cFour buildings total were affected by the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

The blaze is currently under investigation. The Ocean County Fire Marshall was still on scene Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
