Seaside Heights is planning to take a vacant parcel of the north end of the borough’s boardwalk and raise it as an accessible viewing location for those who are disabled or otherwise unable to trudge out onto the beachfront.<\/p>\n

For years, a square-shaped slice of boardwalk has sat empty at Hiering Avenue, just north of the Sky Ride amusement. That spot, as well as many others along the boardwalk, were once popular locations from which to view the ocean, but the dunes produced by last year’s beach replenishment project have blocked the view in most areas.<\/p>\n

“Some concerns that we\u2019ve heard from some residents is that they\u2019re older now, they don\u2019t go to the beach as much, but they want to see the beach,” said Mayor Anthony Vaz.<\/p>\n

The borough council on Wednesday voted in favor of soliciting bids to build a raised viewing area on the vacant piece of boardwalk that will serve as a lookout point toward the ocean.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re going to provide a ramp-way for handicap access, where a wheelchair can go, and people can see the beach,” Vaz said.<\/p>\n

The construction schedule will be set after bid are returned and a contract is awarded.<\/p>\n
