(Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lavallette\u2019s borough council reorganized Monday night \u2013 and held its meeting \u201cback at home\u201d on Grand Central Avenue for the first time since Superstorm Sandy struck in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a little bittersweet knowing what we needed to go through, the catastrophe we endured in Sandy, to get us to this place,\u201d said Councilman\u00a0James G. An elevator brings guests up to the council chambers, which doubles as a municipal courtroom, on the second floor. The dais is set against a window and below a magnificent cathedral ceiling that \u2013\u00a0during the summer \u2013 will allow light to shine through to the proceedings. Microphones will make hearing meetings easier for members of the community, while the seating arrangements are more comfortable than the council\u2019s temporary digs at the First Aid Squad building down the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we have accomplished many things,\u201d said Councilwoman\u00a0Joanne Filippone, who was sworn in to a fourth term on the governing body Monday. \u201cOur community is still healing from the disaster of Superstorm Sandy, but our progress is notable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Filippone, according to her colleagues, put in countless hours of work on the new municipal building, and continues to serve on the borough\u2019s Memorabilia Committee, which is tasked with turning the building\u2019s interior into an inviting and engaging space, with a nod to the town\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe walls, essentially, are bare,\u201d said\u00a0Filippone. \u201cThat is on purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_874\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-874\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-874\" src=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/lavallette-seaside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_4868-240x180.jpg\" alt=\"Councilman James G. (Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The committee has four projects underway, including work on a historic montage of Lavallette\u2019s history that will adorn the council chambers. A public quilt will be displayed on the building\u2019s first floor, with the help of a local builder who is donating his time to help create the display, and other exhibits on the USS Lavallette and aspects of the borough\u2019s nautical heritage. There will also be a metal sculpture of a historical nature eventually added to the building, though\u00a0Filippone said its subject will not be revealed before it is debuted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had two sculptors propose ideas to us, and it should be magnificent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Following the swearing in of the two re-elected council members, the meeting agenda was relatively light in nature, consisting primarily of reorganizational motions and appointments. There were few changes in personnel from years past, the most notable change being the appointment of Bonnie Peterson as borough prosecutor, replacing Kim Pascarella.
