Lavallette borough council members on Monday night agreed to expand the hours during which bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk to include mornings.<\/p>\n

After debating the safety of bicycles on the boardwalk coming in close proximity to pedestrians and beachgoers, the council last year voted to limit the hours bicycles were allowed to evenings between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. While some residents supported the new schedule because it eliminated bikes during sunrise walks, many others said they missed the enjoyment of a morning ride along the oceanfront.<\/p>\n

“We tried it last year with the evening hours last year, and it worked, so we continued it this year,” said Council President Anita Zalom, but after hearing requests from residents, proposed adding mornings from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. to bike riding hours.<\/p>\n

Zalom said she consulted with the beach captains and others involved in morning activities along the boardwalk before making her proposal. Designating the hours to be 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. would also make it easier to modify signage to add the “PM” portion.<\/p>\n

“They thought that 5 to 8 in the morning wouldn\u2019t be a big problem as long as they\u2019re off the boardwalk by 9 [a.m.],” she said, of the beach staff.<\/p>\n

The council then voted to add the morning bicycle time, effective immediately.<\/p>\n
