A 30-year-old man who police say fled the scene of an accident with injuries in Toms River Monday night has been arrested and charged with several offenses, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

Andrew Gajewski, 30, of Manchester, is facing charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with injuries, three counts of assault by auto, resisting arrest, and injuring a law enforcement animal. The charges stem from a motor vehicle accident that occurred near Route 37 and Bachelor Street in Toms River at about 8:30 p.m. Monday night, a statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, Toms River police were called to the area for a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Responding officers arrived to find a 2022 Ford F-150 and a 2021 GMC Acadia with damage consistent with a head-on collision. The driver of the Ford, later identified as Gajewski, fled the scene on foot, the statement said. The driver of the Acadia was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he is listed in stable condition. A passenger in the Acadia and a passenger in the Ford were both transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River where they were treated and released.<\/p>\n

Gajewski was taken into custody in a wooded area near the scene of the crash after \u201cphysically resisting arrest and assaulting a Toms River Police Department K-9,\u201d the statement said. Gajewski was transported to Community Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained during his apprehension. Officers at the scene \u201cobserved Gajewski exhibiting signs of intoxication\u201d and, as such, drew a sample of Gajewski\u2019s blood after obtaining a court-authorized search warrant.<\/p>\n

An initial investigation found that Gajewski was traveling on the wrong side of the roadway at the time of the collision, the report said, as well as \u201cspeeding and driving recklessly.\u201d He was issued several motor vehicle summonses in addition to the criminal charges.<\/p>\n

Gajewski was lodged in the Ocean County Jail on Tuesday pending a detention hearing.<\/p>\n
