A Toms River man who earned the nickname \u201cBrim Reaper\u201d was among a dozen people \u2013 including other Shore locals \u2013 charged this week with drug distribution.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney\u2019s office for the Southern District of New York charged\u00a0James F. Smith III, also known as \u201cTrey,\u201d \u201cBrim Reaper,\u201d and \u201cReaper,\u201d 26, of Toms River, with\u00a0participating in a drug trafficking organization that distributed \u201clarge quantities of heroin in and around Monmouth and Ocean Counties,\u201d a statement from the office said.<\/p>\n

Other locals among those charged were\u00a0Damar Bivins, 26, of Toms River,\u00a0Jair Oliver, 24, of Brick,\u00a0Tysheem Smith, 28, of Lakewood,\u00a0Joel Rosado, 38, of Freehold,\u00a0Aveena Vitrano-Manley, 23, of Howell,\u00a0Frank Desanto, 40, of Stafford,\u00a0Marcellus Cutler, 48, of Lakewood and\u00a0Tyron Trotman, 30, of Manchester.<\/p>\n

Raids were conducted by the DEA on Tuesday. Officials said members of the organization obtained heroin and from The Bronx and the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and distributed it in the Shore area.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs alleged, this organization transported large quantities of heroin from Washington Heights and the Bronx across the Hudson to Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey, helping to fuel the opioid epidemic plaguing our nation,\u201d said\u00a0Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim. \u201cToday\u2019s arrests of twelve alleged members of this heroin distribution organization is part our sustained commitment, along with our partners at the DEA, to stop the flow of heroin into and out of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each defendant is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute narcotics. Smith, Oliver and Cutler\u00a0are also charged with conspiring to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute one kilogram and more of mixtures and substances containing a detectable amount of heroin, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison.<\/p>\n
