An investigation into a sexual harassment complaint<\/a> against Toms River Regional schools superintendent David M. Healy, followed by an investigation into who leaked news of the complaint to the press, have cost taxpayers approximately $18,000, a school official said.<\/p>\n

Stephen R. Leone, the board attorney, said his firm charged $18,000, at a price of $160 per hour, to look into the allegations that Healy made inappropriate comments about the appearance of an employee\u2019s legs. The investigation was conducted by former Superior Court Judge Vincent Grasso, who is now an employee of the firm.<\/p>\n

The outcome of the investigation has never been divulged publicly, however a board member characterized the result Tuesday night as \u201cinconclusive\u201d during a discussion on a new contract for Healy, which was ultimately approved.<\/p>\n

Leone said including the most recent bills that have yet to be paid by the district, a private investigative firm has charged $11,000 to investigate the leak.<\/p>\n

After some objections from members of the public, Board President Ben Giovine defended the hiring of the investigator.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we would prefer to incur no costs, the board must remain steadfast \u2026 to ensure the privacy of our employees and students,\u201d said Giovine.<\/p>\n

The investigation into Healy was closed Aug. 17, Leone said. Thus far, the original complainant has not filed any lawsuits or additional actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have had no further action from the complainant and have dealt with it in a responsible way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
