(Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a career that shouldn\u2019t have ended this early.<\/p>\n<p>After 15 years protecting Toms River resident as a member of the police department, Patrolman Dewey \u201cD.J.\u201d Unger retired Tuesday night after being injured in the line of duty.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201ccop\u2019s cop,\u201d he enjoyed the camaraderie of working the midnight shift and took the assignment many other balk at. He volunteered his time with the Police Athletic League to help the youth of the township, helped create several sports camps for kids and became certified as an EMT to go above and beyond to help resident in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a wonderful 15 years with us,\u201d said Chief Mitch Little.<\/p>\n<p>Unger\u2019s career was stopped in its tracks when he was called to deal with the an emotionally disturbed person who became \u201cextremely violent,\u201d Little said. \u201cHe ended up hurting his hand to the point where he can\u2019t work anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_484\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-484\" class=\"size-large wp-image-484\" src=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/tomsriver\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16486902_1397020046976374_8560114786443522861_o-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ptl.
