(Photo: Daniel Nee)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Toms River High School North wrestling coaches\u00a0John\u00a0DeMarco and Josh Huber were hailed as heroes for their role in saving the life of a Donovan Catholic student <a href=\"http:\/\/highschoolsports.nj.com\/news\/article\/-884973645404315495\/donovan-catholic-wrestler-shocked-and-revived-on-mat-by-athletic-trainer-assistant-coach\/\">during a tournament match last month<\/a>. On Wednesday night, they received a standing ovation and a room full of cheers for their quick-thinking actions that night.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0Donovan Catholic wrestler Brandon Gonzalez won a match against a North student during the tournament, which also included Lakewood High School, the student grappler never got up off the mat. After a few second went by, referees and coaches knew something had gone horrible wrong. They soon discovered Gonzalez had stopped breathing and had no pulse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSports suddenly took a back seat to what was really happening,\u201d said Toms River Regional Athletic Director Tom Arminio. \u201cBrandon was in cardiac arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several people in the Lakewood gymnasium where the tournament was being held rushed to Gonzalez\u2019s aid.\u00a0Pat Halpin, Lakewood\u2019s athletic trainer, local dentist Joseph Oleske as well as DeMarco and Huber sprung into action. While Huber and DeMarco performed CPR, trying to revive Gonzalez on the mat, Donovan Catholic\u2019s head wrestling coach Stephen Glawson, an oral surgeon from Lacey, used a defibrillator to restart his heart in time for EMTs to arrive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_524\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-524\" class=\"size-full wp-image-524\" src=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/tomsriver\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/donovan-cath.jpg\" alt=\"Wrestlers pray during a match where a teammate, Brandon Gonzalez, went into cardiac arrest. (Credit: Stephen Glawson)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBecause of our district policy that all coaches be trained in CPR and AED uses, these men knew what to do,\u201d said\u00a0Arminio, congratulating the two assistant coaches. \u201cAll worked feverishly and saved the life of Brandon Gonzalez. That night, everyone was a winner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither DeMarco nor Huber spoke at the meeting.
