(Credit: Aaron Mott\/Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Voters in Toms River\u2019s Fire District 2, which includes areas covered by the Pleasant Plains and Silverton fire companies, voted down the proposed budget for the district, leading the township council to cut the spending plan at its meeting Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The council voted in favor of a cut of $40,000\u00a0from the district\u2019s spending plan,\u00a0leaving the volunteer fire companies with an operate on a $4,560,000<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spent a significant amount of time going through the budget and some of the concerns we had on both the revenue side and the expenditure side,\u201d said Township Administrator Paul Shives, who described the cut as a \u201cslight decrease.\u201d For taxpayers, the fire district tax will be\u00a0remain at 0.71 cents per $100 of assessed real estate valuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a situation where their budget is non-inflated,\u201d said Councilman Jeffrey Carr. \u201cThere weren\u2019t many areas where we were able to cut, and a couple where it was possible, we thought it would have a negative impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>William McPhail, a resident who spoke out against the budget before it went up for a vote in February, said he would like to have seen the council cut more of the district\u2019s $250,000 in administrative expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that budget, somewhere, you\u2019ve got two administrators and five commissioners,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not asking you to cut necessary supplies or equipment, but you\u2019ve got to cut that budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s district budget will leave the fire companies with $1.447 million in capital reserve, which should allow the companies to continue purchasing equipment on a \u201cpay as you go\u201d system instead of doing significant bonding, for which officials gave fire commissioners praise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt goes to show there is not a whole lot of fluff in this budget,\u201d Carr said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fb-share-button fcbkbttn_large_button \" data-href=\"https:\/\/shorebeat.com\/tomsriver\/2017\/03\/toms-river-council-makes-cut-to-defeated-district-2-fire-budget\/\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"large\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Voters in Toms River\u2019s Fire District 2, which includes areas covered by the Pleasant Plains and Silverton fire companies, voted down the proposed budget for the district, leading the township council to cut the spending plan at its meeting Tuesday.
