Toms River police said Wednesday night that they were investigating a threat pertaining to Toms River High School South.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware of a potential threat to High School South circulating social media this evening,\u201d the department said in a statement. \u201cWe are working with the school administration and county law enforcement, and are thoroughly investigating the matter to ensure the safety of all students and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The department advised residents to avoid clicking on links in digital comments sections, as they may contain misinformation.<\/p>\n

Shorebeat separately learned that posts to the Snapchat social media platform were the source of the threat, the nature of which was not described in detail. Local and county law enforcement were working to determine whether the threats were legitimate or not. Following a high-profile school shooting in Tennessee earlier this week, media across the country have been reporting an uptick in threats against schools, most of which have been unfounded.<\/p>\n
