As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, Toms River officials announced this week that they have created 12 new courts spread between three township parks.
A dozen new courts have been marked at Shelter Cove Park, Bey Lea Park, and Snug Harbor Park. Mayor Dan Rodrick said this week that six pickleball courts can fit in the space of one traditional tennis court, making this a “groundbreaking transformation” of existing park space.
“By prioritizing this modern sport, we are not just keeping up with trends – we are ensuring that Toms River remains an accessible and engaging place for residents of all ages to stay active and connected,” he said.
The addition of the 12 new pickleball courts is part of a larger plan to revitalize the township’s parks, Rodrick said, adding that “Many of our basketball and tennis courts have fallen into disrepair, limiting opportunities for our aspiring athletes.”
The township, he said, is beginning a comprehensive repaving project for all of Toms River’s basketball and tennis courts. The effort includes significant upgrades at Snug Harbor, Skyview, and Bey Lea Parks, with an eye on improving safety and accessibility.
